May 1, 2008

Vancouver - BC’s Retail industry’s brightest will come together on May 6th to learn about the latest industry trends, what is on the horizon and how future-focused retailers will address the changes.

BC’s Retail industry’s brightest will come together on May 6th to learn about the latest industry trends, what is on the horizon and how future-focused retailers will address the changes.

“Retailers need to be on the cutting edge of trends” says Mark Startup, President and CEO of Retail BC.  “Consumers have increasingly high expectations of retailers, and retailers are in the business of customer satisfaction” explains Startup of why the industry has to be keenly aware of upcoming trends and what impact they may have on business.

From the “green revolution”, to the challenges leading staff groups with an increasing demographic spread, to the lightning fast advancements in retail technology, to the increasing importance of corporate citizenship and the approaching Olympic Games, the retail industry is at the forefront of a huge number of global trends.

BC’s retail leaders are attending the Passion for Retail: Global Trends and Local Retail Gala put on by Retail BC.  “The topic is in response to the demands of our members, to help retailers get a clearer picture of what is around the corner”, says Startup.  In a dynamic and ever-changing industry, having the opportunity to look to the future will benefit business immensely.

The evening will also honour Murray Goldman, retired owner of famous Murray Goldman’s men’s clothing stores and Boys’Co as the first winner of Retail’s BC Lifetime Achievement Award, for his 62 years in business and creation of one of Vancouver’s greatest retail success stories.  Scholarships will also be presented to two young aspiring retail prodigies looking to pursue a career within the industry:  Nikolina Babic of Argyle Secondary School in North Vancouver, and Adam Pospisil of Moscrop Secondary School in Burnaby.

Retail BC is the leading retail trade association representing over 4000 storefronts across BC.  Retail sales in BC generate over $56 billion annually through 30,000 retail operations, most of them small and medium-sized enterprises.  Over 285,000 people are employed directly in the retail trade sector in BC, which is the largest private-sector employer in the province representing over 11% of employment.
